I came to see Shasta because I was experiencing extreme tiredness, pain all over my body with coldness, and enormous sinus like pressure around my right eye. My eye also felt swollen. I had been to many doctors about this but got no results from their treatment. I also had a big lump, almost an inch in diameter in my neck; right side: and a cyst like lump on my head ~6 millimeters. I also had restless leg syndrome, and a hard time sitting down and sleeping because of the pain in my back and lower half of the body. In addition, I had very bothersome and painful menstruation; blood clotting- very bad cramping on day three of my cycle.

Energy, Weight Loss, Decreased Stomach Ache with Hasimotot’s hypohyrioidism

When I first met with Shasta, I had the following symptoms: lower back pain, weak and painful ankle, drank 8-10 cups of coffee a day and weighed 192 pounds.  I was also experiencing low energy.  Over the next 10 months of treatments on average 2 treatments a months, I no longer drink caffeine, I have lost 12 pounds, my back is strong and healthy and I am able to run now that my ankle is healthy! – P.M.

Great place and Shasta is wonderful. For years I have been getting weekly acupuncture treatments from various centers in the Bay Area. For a regular client, Shasta is the best. Her treatments are very good and the ambiance of the treatment rooms are warm and relaxing. The beds are comfortable and the music is peaceful. The treatment center is the nicest that I have seen and her prices are the best that I have found. I buy the multi treatment package which gives me and even better deal. The most useful service that Shasta offers is the drop in service. I am very busy and don’t know when I’ll get a free hour. She has 6 rooms and always keeps two open for those that want to drop in without an appointment. In the year I have been going to her, I have dropped in without an appointment most of the time and 90% of the time she has taken me. I may have to wait 15 minutes while she gets though her scheduled clients, but I enjoy the extra time in the room to relax and prepare for my treatment. I have not been able to find any other office that offers a “drop-in” service. Most other acupuncturist can’t offer such a service because the cost of having 2 extra beds always open for such clients is not cost effective, but Shasta wasn’t concerned about the extra cost of a larger office, she seemed more concerned about not turning someone away if they needed a treatment at a non scheduled time.

I have been to many acupuncturists over the past two decades, and Shasta is , without a doubt, the most thorough and thoughtful acupuncturist of any I have seen. From the detailed discussions we have before and after my treatment, to the ‘doorbell’ buzzer I can use to ‘call’ her any time during the treatment. Shasta’s manner and methods feel deeply caring and attentive, and very much result oriented.

One of the things I particularly appreciate about the Way Of Wellness office is that they are so down-to earth and real in their communication style. Low-key and taking the responsibility to not give information that could be misconstrued, the staff is clearly showing due diligence, being as careful as they must be when operating a medically focused office.

Another reason I value Shasta so much Is that she is one acupuncturist I can go to who does not push me to eat meat. I am vegan and have chi deficiency. Unlike every other acupuncturist who has told me to eat meat, Shasta not only agreed that meat would not help me, but she expressed support for my choices regardless of what the textbooks would say. She made it clear that my personal choices were, first and foremost, the most important deciding factor in how to approach my health concerns.

Shasta’s approach feels thorough, compassionate, respectful and focused on the individual I highly recommend her!

I went to Shasta as a result of Yelp offer. I sort of expected to be pushed through the mill and given the minimal amount of service, just to fulfill the coupon requirement. What I got was quite the opposite. I felt that Shasta treated me as if I were a first time patient, taking time to review my chart information and answer any questions I had. She was caring, thorough, and very knowledgeable about her field of expertise. I came away with helpful information about my energy balance and dietary needs. She is truly a health care professional. I would recommend her office to anyone seeking acupuncture or help with energy balance.

“I came in with aching joints all over (fibromyalgia), numbness in hands, fatigue, uncontrollable ite, chronic constipation, stuffy nose, burning dry eyes, and low energy. I was treated for about 13 weeks, pretty much once a week. I lost an excess seven pounds, feel much warmer, and most of the other symptoms are greatly dissipated or gone. Acupuncture has been the best treatment for me that I could imagine. The information I have gained will remain important forever.
Thanks again!”

“It was after the birth of my second child that I began having ongoing sinus problems. Prior to his birth, I’d had approximately 3 sinus infections in 36 years! After his birth I had 5-6 within 10 months. It had gotten to the point where the infections were low grade and almost constant. Both x-rays and CAT scan failed to give definite proof that an infection actually existed. However, a course of antibiotics relieve the symptoms – although only for a few weeks at a time after which the problems reoccurred. It was the sinus issues that originally brought me into Shasta’ care.

During this time period I was also suffering from uneven energy levels. Some days I would feel totally energetic, alert and clear headed. Other days, for no apparent reason, I would feel sluggish, have difficulty concentrating and in general feel less than 100%. I also experienced ongoing sleep difficulties.

During the first 10 months after my son’s birth I had logged more office visits to the urgent care and my personal physician than in the previous 6 years combined! When I asked one of the urgent care physicians why this was happening to me he stated “well your body probably has changed” (gee – ya think?!)

Our family practitioner cares for both myself and the rest of my family and I highly value his opinion. However, in this case my instincts led me to believe he was not on the right track. He felt my problems were probably due to depression. I partially agreed with him. After all, if you had constant sinus infections, sleep difficulties and no energy to keep up with your kids you’d be depressed too! Our difference of opinion centered on whether the depression was causing the symptoms or whether the symptoms resulted in depression. To make a long story short – I asked him for an acupuncture prescription for sinus headaches and was given one. I began seeing Shasta at the end of November 1996. Within 3 visits, the nasal congestion and sinus headaches had improved remarkably. I have not had a sinus infection since. We continued the treatments, focusing on my energy level and muddled concentration issues. I began noticing a leveling of my energy. Shasta recommended a diet very contrary to the present (especially in Santa Cruz!) fads. NO cold salads, NO fruit juices, NO raw veggies. In fact, very little if any cold or raw foods. I began eating oatmeal with nuts and cinnamon in the mornings instead of cold cereal with even colder milk. I cooked my veggies (they were still slightly crisp) and even my apples and pears. I ate more nuts, used more fats and yes – ate more meat! Miso soup has become a staple part of my diet. Occasionally I still thoroughly enjoy a Caesar Salad but I now have a warm drink with it. Of all the faddish eating plans I’ve tried over the years this one is the easiest and healthiest. In fact, looking back at my childhood, it is very close to how I naturally ate during my youth.

I have also experienced some relief in PMS symptoms. Although I still bloat and feel somewhat “off” for several days a month, I now manage this time much better through my diet. I feel better now than I have in a long time. I credit acupuncture and Shasta’s guidance!”

I wanted to write this letter to thank you for being my acupuncturist. During the last five months, I have made amazing progress in my well being:

When I came to you, I had several problems, namely, very poor digestion, insomnia, low energy, asthma, and anxiety. I regularly had pain and bloating apparently from not being able to digest the foods I ate. I was also overweight and had to wear very loose pants because of the almost constant bloating that I experienced. From acupuncture, herbs, a change in diet, and doing daily Chi Kung , I am almost completely free from discomfort and bloating. I have also lost 15 pounds of excess weight and have gone from a 40 waist size to a 36 waist size!

Also, following the same program, which included almost daily Chi Kung exercise (David Carradine’s Beginner’s workout designed by Arnold Tayam), and getting to bed earlier, I have much more energy than I did just three months ago.

Also, while I was seeing you, I was diagnosed by an MD with Panic Disorder, which was causing most of my insomnia. The herbs and exercise program that you recommended made a world of difference – I almost never have panic attacks any more, and I’m much calmer than I used to be. In fact, during this same time period, my blood pressure went from high normal to normal, another sign of my calmer nervous system.

Finally, my asthma attacks have diminished under your care so much that I never need to use the inhaler that my MD prescribed for me to use in case of an attack.

Thank you so much – I can now go on to graduate school in the Fall, knowing that I will be healthy enough to be successful in that rigorous program!

Before & After

I’m well – that’s the first time I’ve said that…12/22/97

It feels like paradise.

The accomplishment is finally shaking this chronic fatigue syndrome I’ve had since 1987. Symptoms of great fatigue, menstrual problems, pale, skinny, and just not feeling well. My fatigue was so severe I could not drag myself to the bathroom, cook, or work, and I was achy everywhere.. I was officially diagnosed with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue, and had regular ebstein barr virus tests that were off the charts for ten years. I also had hypothyroidism. My husband thought I was going to die. There were times when I thought it was hopeless.
Now, for the first time in my life I can say I have energy enough to workout, work long hours, cook and about 90% normal life. I tried a lot of things, some helped a little, like the B12 shots and getting the mercury fillings taken out which made an immediate improvement).
How acupuncture and Chinese Medicine helped me is it taught me to listen. I always felt cold and was even told my skin looked blue, and this was never taken seriously by Western Medicine. I was debilitated by the cold. Now I’m warm and when I do feel cold, I know what to do, and the cold and pain go away. What Shasta has taught me is a lot of good information on nutrition, hormones, alternatives, etc. for my specific imbalances and they really work.
It is also very important to have a healer who takes an interest in the patient. I look forward to seeing her and getting the needles. Lastly, I cannot stress enough the importance of a supportive spouse. My husband was and is 100% supportive, never getting annoyed when I wasn’t well. He helped me, he cooked and cleaned for years Education is key, and Shasta has been a good coach with Chinese Medicine, and put me on the right track.

In February I became ill. The illness started with a 101 degree fever for 24 hours with aches, chills, headaches, etc. for several days. Then severe diarrhea, loss of appetite, rapid weight loss, chronic low-grade bladder infection, minor sore throat, low-grade fevers that came and went and near crippling fatigue.

After 10 days I visited a western physician who diagnosed a “flu-like” virus. Prescribed 10 – 12 hours of sleep per day. He had blood and urine tests done that came up negative. He predicted the illness would pass after 3 weeks.

At 3 weeks the diarrhea had cleared, but all the other symptoms remained. The fatigue was the worst. I’m a mom of 2 young children (fortunately, I had already quit my job). The kids were not sick and had loads of energy that was not getting properly channeled. I went back to the western doctor and had him test for mononucleosis – Epstein-Barr virus. The test was negative. He sent me home and said there was nothing he could do.

At this point, I turned to Shasta. Shasta diagnosed a cold condition with deficient chi. She immediately started a regimen of moxa/acupuncture, herbal medicine and dietary therapies. I eliminated cold and raw foods, began taking bone marrow broth twice a day. I also did treatments at home with a hot water bottle and moxa essence, and learned to dress warmly at all times. I slowly began to improve.

I would have 2 or 3 “good” days where I felt nearly normal energy and then 1 or 2 “bad” days of zero energy, low-grade fever and sore throat. On the bad days I would use the moxa and hot water bottle 3 or 4 times. The heat on the back of my neck felt so good. I really felt that my immune system was being stimulated. Shasta continued treatments in her office twice a week for several weeks and then weekly for several months along with daily chi kung (from Carradine videos with Arnold), as I gradually improved. I really looked forward to my treatments and wanted to continue even after I was well. Shasta was so supportive. I would get very discouraged and feared I would have to give up a long-term goal of sailing around the world with my family due to lack of energy and health. Shasta gave me hope that I would get well and I did! I feel like my normal energetic self again.

We recently moved onto our sailboat and are preparing to leave the Bay Area in early September. I’m leaving not only with my health, but also with an education in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Shasta was great about explaining everything in detail. She also lent me many books from her library on TCM, women’s health, nutrition, and energetic medicine. We have also put together an herbal first aid kit for the trip!

I came to see Shasta because I was experiencing extreme tiredness, pain all over my body with coldness, and enormous sinus like pressure around my right eye. My eye also felt swollen. I had been to many doctors about this for a few months without any relief. I also had a big lump, almost an inch in diameter in my neck; right side; and a cyst like lump on my head ~ 6 millimeter. I also had restless leg syndrome, hard time sitting down and sleeping because of the pain in my back and lower half of my body; numbness in my hands at night, and a hard time getting to sleep. In addition, I had very bothersome and painful menstruation; blood clotting – very bad cramping on the third day.

After ~4 sessions of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine and diet, my eye was hardly or not at all swollen anymore; and the pressure was 90% gone, the lump in my neck decreased to about 1/5 of the size; the “cyst” on my head dried up and had no more pain; the pain in my body was almost gone and I sleep wonderful now; no more tingling in hands; no more restless leg. After five treatments the sinus pressure was 100% gone. The first treatment was on the first day of my menstrual period; on the third day there was no cramping, and I flowed very different and better than I did for years. I even was able to run 2 miles on the 3rd day; where I usually have to lay in bed for hours and take anaprox for pain.

To me this was a miracle. My tiredness made place for strong active and happy energy.. Turning 41 was not a great feeling for me 5 months ago; now I feel very young again! Throughout the process I started feeling better and better and happier. The Chinese herbal medicine that Shasta gave me really helped too. Besides that she put me on a kicharee (mung bean soup) diet, which was tremendously good for me.

It made me feel very strong and fulfilled my hunger for good wholesome food. I also was able to get off coffee and cold raw foods, which wasn’t easy for me, but I’ve learned about some wonderful alternatives. I found the acupuncture sessions very relaxing and I was treated with a lot of love and interest; something I had never experienced in any other doctors office!

I will keep going to see Shasta every month, just to feel great. I learned that symptoms are to be looked at with respect to your overall health, and with some effort and persistence, you can treat your whole body and find out where your problem lays. There is a reason for a symptom, not just a pill or treatment. There is nothing better than a healthy body.

I’m a 25 year old female who for the first time in my life sought acupuncture.

I initially came to see Shasta out of curiosity, and the longing to feel better. Being a single mother, I thought it was normal to feel tired, drained, sick, week, and anxious all of the time, but after just one visit with Shasta I realized that just might not be the case.

Within a few weeks of treatments, and following Shasta’s direction, I noticed my energy had risen, I fought off a flu I normally would have gotten, felt warmer, and all around healthier. After one months of my first treatment I felt well enough to quit smoking, which I didn’t have planned and didn’t think was possible because I had been smoking for 12 years (since I was 13 years old). With treatments from Shasta every other day for two weeks, to my utmost surprise quitting was much easier than I had ever expected. Since I quit about eight other people around me have quit, including my mother who smoked for 30 years!

I will continue my care with Shasta to feel the best and healthiest I can, as well to learn how to take care of myself and my two year old son.

I came to Shasta first complaint of allergies. I also had sinus congestion, chronic fatigue, PMS, and stress. Shasta did my T.C.M. diagnosis and called my syndrome “lung qi deficiency and kidney yang deficiency” and proceeded to treat the above. Since the most acute problem was the allergies and sinus congestion Shasta primarily focused on these during my first few months of treatments. Within months my symptoms had greatly improved. I learned that allergies, sinus congestion, chronic fatigue and stress are all part of a similar disease pattern and to treat one Shasta would have to treat the others concurrently from a T.C.M. perspective.

I came to see Shasta mainly for chemical sensitivities with symptoms of tightness in chest, shortness of breath, numbness in sinuses, tightness in right lung, rib pain etc. I also experienced general fatigue all the time and chronic low back pain. Much to my surprise Shasta informed me that the fatigue and low back pain were related from a Chinese Medicine perspective, and that the allergies I felt should improve with an increase of energy…

I began the health program she designed for me which included changing my diet dramatically, getting to bed earlier, and other lifestyle changes. I really appreciated how Shasta combined Western Medicine laboratory tests with the Chinese Medicine treatments. We were able to rule out many possible problems by testing what I may be allergic to, my gastrointestinal function, as well as my hormones. Because of this Shasta was able to refer me to the right places for different ailments.

I am happy to say that after many years of chronic low back pain and rib pain, I am almost pain free! It seems as if my chemical sensitivities are better also. The interesting thing is that the main thing Shasta said we were setting out to achieve has happened — I HAVE MUCH MORE ENERGY!!

I came into Shasta’s clinic with many symptoms ranging from low energy, low back pain, bleeding gums, calve cramps, neck and shoulder tension anxiety, to left wrist pain, etc. but the three worst complaints were #1) Sinus congestion #2) sinus headaches #3) abdomenal gas, bloating and cramping. So these are the three main symptoms Shasta focused her treatments on. Most all of the above symptoms including the sinus headaches have been greatly reduced or eliminated. The sinus congestion and abdominal cramping have been the two most persistent and chronic problems.

Over the course of the last year and a half of treatments Shasta advised my on dietary, herbal and lifestyle recommendations. She recommended that I purchase a powerful air purifier for my home, an exercise program and to decrease my sugar, dairy, and chilled foods, etc. I have been able to follow most of these except perhaps the exercise.

I went to my M.D. and was told that I had pretty severe deviated septum which he recommended surgery for. Due to the deviated septum, with all of Shasta’s effort the condition has improved, but not fixed.

Most all of the above symptoms including the sinus headaches have been greatly reduced or eliminated. The sinus congestion and abdominal cramping have been the two most persistent and chronic problems.

I believe the acupuncture treatments are necessary because they improve all of my symptoms and keep me from having bad sinus headaches.

I’ve had type I diabetes since I was 21, along with fibromyalgia, aching pain, sleep disturbance, memory loss, uncomfortable feeling of cold, and severe exhaustion. I also felt a lot of mental confusion, headaches, muscle weakness, and weight gain.

My blood sugar levels average around 220 with my insulin. Within four weeks with acupuncture and herbal formula I was able to use one third less of dose of insulin with an average blood sugar level of 130! I was also sleeping normally (my doctor took me off of my antidepressant medications for sleep) with no more night sweats for the first time in ages. Because I could sleep better I had, much more energy, a lot less pain all over my body, and with the food recommendation Shasta made, I also lost 6 pounds!

1. Date began treatments – 8/2003

2. Date completed treatments – 11/2003

3. My primary complaint was a loss of my menses (amennhorea). I had not had a period in about a year and a half and I was growing more and more concerned about its effect on my health. I had seen Western doctors, but they said they could only offer me birth control in the hopes that it would “jump-start” a regular cycle. I was losing faith that my body could take care of itself, but I wasn’t ready to manufacture something that should have been natural.

4. My secondary complaints were that I was always cold, fatigued, anxious, depressed, my hair was falling out, I had a sudden increase in my cholesterol levels, and I just felt “off” for most of my 20’s.

5. During my first meeting with Shasta, she suggested that I might be hypothyroid. I was surprised because I had often thought that I might be hypothyroid, but my TSH tests always came back “normal.” Shasta asked me to bring back my test results the following visit. During that second visit, she was quick to point out the information that confirmed that I may have thyroid issues. For the first time in my life, I felt relieved and affirmed. Shasta has an amazing ability to carefully listen to what you are saying and to talk to you in a manner that makes you know that she will do everything in her ability to help you. For the first time in 10 years, I felt like I wasn’t crazy, perhaps there really was something wrong with me! Shasta encouraged me to get extensive thyroid blood work done, and I did, only to find out that some of my levels were “normal.” I was crushed. Even more crushed when I went to Kaiser and the endocrinologist basically told me that I was a hypochondriac. I began to really think I was a hypochondriac, which didn’t do much for my depression. I stopped treatments shortly after that (due to my crazy school schedule).

Once I stopped treatments, my depression became more severe. I was also seeing a therapist at the time and I was on the verge of going on anti-depressants. After a few months of not seeing Shasta, I began getting an influx of phone calls from her. Every call began with, “Hi, this is Shasta, and I just want to check in on you. I am convinced you are hypothyroid and you need to see another doctor…” Eventually I called Shasta back and she convinced me to try thyroid medication before anti-depressants. I figured I had nothing to lose, and that spending a little money was worth it, if it would give me a life back.I visited the doctor that Shasta recommended and I immediately went on Armour thyroid medication. Within a week, I felt much better. I have been on medication for over a month and the difference is VERY noticeable. Coworkers, friends, and family have all noticed that I am back to my old self. I have energy to live and I am no longer cold all the time. I am convinced that Shasta is the advocate who is responsible for giving me my life back. Even when I gave up on myself, she never gave up on me.

On another note, my primary complaint was resolved within one month of treatments! I regained my regular cycle within just a few treatments! Needless to say, I am convinced that acupuncture works and I have recommended Shasta to everyone I know.

Thank you Shasta, for being such a wonderful advocate!

A friend of mine referrred us to Dr. Shasta.  Before seeing her, we worked with infertility specialist for ovr a year and they were unable to find the problem.  Infertility treatments imbalanced my hormones and worsen my health.  Dr. Shasta worked with me using acupuncture to cleanse my body to balance my hormones.  I followed her dietary [lan and supplements to nourish my body.  After receiving her acupuncture services for four months, we are expecting our first baby.  Dr. Shasta is very knowledgeable, cordial, compassionate and always willing to go the extra mile to provide excellent care to her patients.  We cannot thank Dr. Shasta enough for her professional services. -Kiran K.
