Employee wellness enhances productivity, creativity and longevity in the workplace.
My educational background is in health promotion. I am a Certified Wellness Coach, primary health care provider and Doctoral Candidate in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, certified yoga instructor, with over 4 decades of exposure to Natural Healthcare and 22 years of wellness coaching and 35,000 consultations. I have been coaching companies and individuals on the importance of promoting a healthy lifestyle and how it can have such a positive impact on both the individual and the community. What I do is help guide people through recognizing the value of that investment — promoting a healthy lifestyle.
As a healthy lifestyle coach, I help assess each person’s individual daily routine and look for what working and what’s not working to help integrate natural self-care modalities into their life.
Habits such as smoking, overeating, and alcohol overuse are often the by-product of a larger psychological struggle in coping with life events whether stress, emotions, fulfillment or a combination of all three. In coping with these things people often adopt behaviors in hopes of masking or ignoring the real issues at hand. It’s not about a lack of education, it’s about the lack of an inner respect for one’s body being the vehicle for self-expression, contribution and lack of culture that values and reinforces positive health behaviors.
Poor health behaviors are just that — a behavior, a habit, an act of repetition. Participating in unhealthy lifestyles then is not due to a lack of education, it’s due to a disconnect between the body, mind, and spirit on the part of the individual and the cultural support system.
70 percent of Americans are overweight and 35 percent are obese. This leads to most of the common health ailments of our time such as hypertension, diabetes, arthritis and more. Overweight people don’t need to be reminded that they are fat — they already know that, just as smokers know smoking is bad for their health. Instead, we need to focus our efforts on coaching individuals through discovering what has caused them to be overweight or start smoking and provide them with the necessary resources to overcome this behavior.
Over the last decade or so companies and organizations have jumped on the bandwagon of employee wellness. Some organizations have launched employee wellness programs because they see the value in improving the wellbeing of the community while others do it simply because they are trying to improve their bottom line. You can see a nice ROI on insurance claims, decrease in sick days, and increase in work productivity — all great things from an employer standpoint. But my question for you and your company is… where do you see the value in promoting and enabling those to promote a healthy lifestyle within your bricks and mortar?
Regardless of whether you are for-profit, not for profit, or non-profit your company has a mission statement. This means your company’s success is driven by and determined through this statement.
Now, what is your internal mission statement? What does your company stand for — morally, ethically, socially, but most importantly when it comes to their biggest investment… their staff. Are you putting as many eggs in the basket internally as you are external to ensure organizational success? Are you investing in your staff’s well-being, their growth and development, and nurturing a culture that values and rewards the role modeling of the company’s mission statement from the inside out?
If not, you are missing out on way more than an ROI on insurance claims and sick days, but the possibility of creating a culture that carries the company’s mission through action and not through words. You can always find a way to sell a product, you can’t, however, buy a culture that is proactive in creating an environment that strives to improve the overall quality of life of all customers and coworkers. However, you can accomplish this through a holistic employee wellness program.
“The mission of Way of Wellness Coaching is to support as many employees as possible in their quest for health, to educate them on ways to release the healing powers of their own bodies through Ancient and Modern Remedies so that they may live Joyous, Vibrant and Balanced Lives, and in turn will be more productive, have less burnout and sick days”
Above is my vision of employee wellness and for some, it may be a little unorthodox as it’s not all about health.
If we focus on the whole person we will see a holistic change. If you only focus on numbers you can only impact numbers. But if you focus on the whole person – mind, body, and spirit then you create a positive impact in a person and the success of your organization. An organization that invests in its’ employees is an organization that invests in its’ future.
